My first student teaching placement in my hometown was a great way to start my teaching experience. I was in a grade 6 classroom with my cooperating teacher being the same teacher that taught me when I was in grade 6, which allowed me to have a better perspective in his point of view. As for the students I was able to build strong relationships that made my time teaching them an amazing experience. I was able to learn a lot during my time with the grade 6 class at CCI, as well as observing other teachers, which I will be able to implement for my next placement.

In my grade 6 class, we covered math, social studies, English (spelling, vocab, and language power), art, French, and a computer class. Music and Physical education were taught by other teachers at the school. However, during my time there I was able to fill in a few half days of teaching P.E., which by far was some of my favorite moments. Some other notable things that occurred while I was there were a spelling bee, doing a scavenger hunt with the other teachers on a PD day, and having the RCMP come in to teach the students about cyber safety. The subject I was mainly in charge of was math, where I had them doing one or two math minutes each day, doing their multiplication. The other portion of the class was spent working on division and nearing the end of my placement was the beginning of fractions.
The ICT we used at my school was IPADS, chrome books, a computer lab, and the smartboard. On the devices, the students used a variety of different sources such as google docs, slides, PowerPoint, word, and their blog posts for assignments. When doing my lesson plans, I usually used YouTube for activating and the smartboard to show and go overwork. However, for my first lesson plan, I had the students use the chrome books to search up Louis Riel and we would come back together to see what we learned/found. This was all of the ICT we ended up using in our classroom and it helped get what we wanted to be accomplished. In the future, I hope to find ways to use other ICT things we learned in University and incorporate them in the classroom I teach.
Two things I felt I was able to execute well were having a loud and clear voice and the ability to get the students to remain on task for the majority of a class. A couple of things to work on would be my time management and to continue working on my lesson plans. There were also a lot of strategies I was able to pick up for classroom management and still a lot more to work on for my next placements.
Overall, my time at CCI taught me a lot of things that will be valuable for me in my next placement and I look forward to using what I’ve learned in my upcoming placements.
